William J. Butler Human Rights Medal Award to The Honorable Unity Dow, Botswana

The Urban Morgan Institute for Human Rights is awarding the William J. Butler Human Rights Medal to The Honorable Unity Dow of Botswana. Unity Dow initiated the first rights-based challenge to a gender-discriminatory law in Botswana, resulting in a Brown v. Board of Education decision that has changed the way the courts interpret human rights cases. She has had a distinguished career as a legal activist, judge, cabinet minister, novelist, and educator. The University of Cincinnati has supported her work for many years, and we are honored to celebrate her inspirational accomplishments.

The program will include presentations from our alumni who have interned in Botswana, a discussion of The Dow Academy, and commentary on the impact that Unity Dow has had in the human rights field. A brief reception will follow the program. The Butler Medal will be presented at the dinner.
