Program Description
For all lawyers who take on “speaking parts” before the court, in negotiation, at deposition or trial, with clients, committees, or boards or for a plenary speech, UC Law’s Center for Practice is pleased to offer Stage Directions for Lawyers’ Speaking Parts.

After introducing techniques for vocal reach, richness and dexterity, program faculty Katherine Webster of CCM and London’s Royal Central School of Speech and Drama will show us how a stage director works with timing, punctuation, volume, and pitch in spoken “lines” to strengthen their impact. Participants will practice the application of vocalization choices on lawyers’ speaking parts in negotiation, oral argument, deposition and trial, client meetings, and committee or boardroom settings. The program will move briefly to tips on the particular challenge of reading out loud from a prepared text, while maintaining audience interest and connection. Finally participants will learn how deliberate body positioning, movement, and gesture can increase receptiveness of judge, jury, client, opposing counsel, or larger audiences, and enhance the clarity, memorability, and persuasiveness of our spoken words.

Last year, our first CLE program collaboration with CCM’s Royal Central School of Speech and Drama instructors, “Lawyer’s Voice,” was a smash hit. This year’s program will be related, but a bit different. So folks who came last year are welcome back.

We invite you to treat yourselves to this cusp-of-the-weekend program: it will be interactive, enjoyable and (of course) entertaining for all.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday afternoon, March 29
