Scholarships helped a hard-working history major make the final push for her dreams

Hannah PfaltzgraffJust two years ago, global finance executive Alan R. Badanes (A&S ’79) set up a fund at the University of Cincinnati to support students studying history. While at UC, Badanes had majored in history and even spent one full year studying abroad. Today, Hannah Pfaltzgraff is benefiting from the UC alumnus’ generosity through the Badanes Fellowship in International History Endowment Fund.

Hannah, a first-generation student, says the scholarship she received through the fund has provided much-needed relief to her and her father, who often works long hours at an auto and tire shop to help Hannah and her sister pay for school.
“The timing could not have been more perfect,” says the fourth-year history major. “I was worried I wouldn’t be able to afford my last year, but then I was awarded this scholarship.”

Today, 80 percent of college students work part-time to cover the costs of tuition – Hannah is no different. In high school, she worked as an assistant archivist before joining the Cincinnati Museum Center. As a freshman, she worked as the holiday train operator for the museum, and returned in the summer of her sophomore year to perform exhibit evaluations. Now a museum camp coordinator, Hannah organizes trips for kids and hopes to instill the same passion she has for museums.

“I helped coordinate the Christmas around the World event which exposes young children to different cultures, and that’s been one of my favorite experiences. I also organized Santa’s arrival, he came in on a helicopter,” Hannah says.

Working at the museum helped Hannah realize where her passion lies, and her experience at UC helped the pieces fall into place. Originally aspiring to be a museum curator, Pfaltzgraff is now considering a graduate degree in museum administration.

Hannah Pfaltzgraff“I’m hoping to be accepted into graduate school to help me perfect my skills. My undergraduate experience has molded me as a person, and I hope grad school will mold me as a professional. I really appreciate UC, I couldn’t imagine life without it,” Hannah says.

Hannah is active in many organizations on campus, taking on the roles of student orientation leader and member of the Student Alumni Council, among many others. This upcoming year she will be a senior class officer, making decisions that will impact students and shape the way they experience UC.

“If I had to drop out of college because I didn’t have enough money, I don’t know what I would’ve done,” Hannah says. “A scholarship like this really changes a student’s life. It certainly changed mine.”
