UC Mountaineering Club
The UC Mountaineering Club (UCMC) has been introducing students to the wonders of the outdoors since 1971. In that time, the UCMC has taught hundreds of people to rock climb, cave, backpack, canoe, raft, and protect the earth at the peer-to-peer level. There is no paid staff and guides are not hired except for marquee trips like rafting or hang gliding. This is the nature and the strength of the club but because of the rapid turnover of experienced and knowledgeable personnel, the Club can be limited in its ability to give even the most basic of training in core disciplines of backpacking, climbing, caving, whitewater sports, wilderness first aid, and technical mountaineering. The Steve Must Memorial Scholarship attempts to bridge this gap by subsidizing an undergraduate's costs to take a detailed and intensive training course in one of these disciplines or in a related area. Afterwards, the student is obligated to bring that knowledge back to UCMC and share it with our entire membership. Check out our Charter for details.
Gear purchase and maintenance is self-funded through a rental fee good for a semester (similar to membership fees of years past and volunteer activities at area running events). The University requires the use of rented vehicles for any club travel outside of Ohio, Indiana, or Kentucky. The only funding that the Club gets from UC must be applied for on a trip-by-trip basis and is used to subsidize costs for trips outside the tristate region. The total amount we are allowed to apply for is generally exhausted by March, which would limit the number of club trips over the summer. The Discretionary Fund is used to subsidize these trips.
