Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions
The Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions (CHHP) is one of the premier medical and health history centers in the United States. Located in the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library in the heart of UC’s Academic Health Center campus, the Winkler Center serves as a medical archive, library, and exhibit facility that encourages visitors and researchers to explore the Cincinnati area’s rich medical and health history and to discover the people who have contributed to important advances in medicine, nursing, and pharmaceutical sciences.
The Winkler Center’s collections include the archives and oral histories of Cincinnati’s giants of medicine and health, books, journals, photographs, and medical artifacts related to the history of medicine in Cincinnati and the history of medicine in general. Most collections have been donated by prominent physicians, medical researchers, UC faculty and other notable professionals with a vision for the preservation of Cincinnati’s renowned medical and health history.
The facility includes the Stanley J. Lucas, M.D. Board Room that features an exhibit of a 15th century Italian apothecary and rotating exhibits illustrating Cincinnati’s medical history and medical pioneers. In fall 2011, a new wing will open to house the unique and nationally recognized collections; the John Hauck Foundation Gallery will feature exhibits and works of medically related art, and the William H. L. Dornette Research Room will provide a secure location for researchers to consult the collections.
Funding Opportunities
Having achieved the funding to complete the Center’s new facility, fund raising efforts are focused on expanding the endowments for a full-time professional archivist and a robust operating and program budget.
